The idea of attending a private medical clinic to help with losing weight may not be familiar to you. To help you decide whether you might benefit from our services, here are some of the questions we are most frequently asked by prospective patients:

1. Will I always see a doctor? Yes, we have a doctor present during all the sessions that the clinic is open, except for very rare occasions due to sickness or holiday.

2. How long will my consultation take? Your first session will require around half an hour, as you need to complete a detailed registration form and have a thorough discussion with the doctor about your weight loss objectives, your lifestyle and your eating plan. Subsequent sessions will usually be shorter, around ten minutes, unless you have specific points that you would like to discuss in more detail with the doctor.

3. How long does the programme take? This depends very much on how well you are able to keep to your eating plan and how much weight you need to lose, but a typical programme would take between three and nine months.

4. How much weight can I expect to lose? This varies significantly between patients, but on average we find that our patients lose between 7 and 14 pounds in the first month and 6 or 7 pounds a month thereafter. Our aim is for steady, progressive weight loss that can then be sustained, rather than for crash dieting.

5. Is it expensive? Treatment programmes start at £16 per week, including consultation with the doctor, appetite suppressant medication and our unique range of eating plans. If you commit to a longer treatment programme, there are discounts built into the prices. We also charge a one-off registration fee of £10, which includes your Starter Pack containing a detailed Guide to Patient Services.

6. I have read that diet clinics provide amphetamines. Is this true?  No, despite the scare stories in some parts of the Press, the medications we provide are not amphetamines. They have a long track record of being safe to use as well as effective. We can provide copies of the Medicines Commission's report on these medications on request. Until recently obesity was regarded as a cosmetic problem, as opposed to a medical problem, so appetite suppressants were not available on the NHS.   Because of this very few doctors know how they work and some think of them as being amphetamines which they definitely are not.   We would be happy to explain the difference to you or your GP if you would care to telephone us.

7. Are you regulated by the authorities? Yes, we are regulated by the Healthcare Commission and by the Obesity Management Association. We are one of the few clinics in the country to be registered under the National Care Standards which includes a rigorous review of our clinical and administrative procedures. Our doctors are also regulated by the General Medical Council.

8. How successful are your programmes? While we can make no guarantees of success as much of this is in your hands, the fact that more than 60% of our new patients are recommended to us by former patients and that we have been providing weight loss services for 20 years suggests that we are doing something right!
